Iyengar Yoga in Dulwich Hill

New Students

At The Yoga Nook we teach Iyengar Yoga, named after Mr BKS Iyengar, a profound practitioner and teacher who died at the age of 96 in 2014. He was born in India during the Spanish flu pandemic, his mother contracted it when she was pregnant and he was born a sickly child. He started yoga at 14, learning from his uncle Krishnamacharya, and credits yoga with regaining his health. He started teaching in the west and his students called his style of yoga “Iyengar Yoga”. Now there are Iyengar Yoga schools all over the world. His family continue to teach in his tradition at RIMYI,  his Institute in Pune, India. www.bksiyengar.com

Iyengar Yoga develops intelligence, clarity, vitality and space within the body. It incorporates active and restorative yoga. Props are sometimes used to bring more clarity to the asanas and make them more accessible.

Working clearly with our bodies increases the clarity of our minds. As our powers of perception grow and we get more connected to our bodies, we see that what we do and how we do it creates the consequences we live with, both in our bodies and our lives. In this way we can learn to have healthier bodies and lead happier lives, and develop tools to help us deal with life’s vicissitudes.

It’s normal to have resistance to change. Feel free to ask your teacher any questions you have or discuss with them issues that arise as you continue to do yoga.

Enrolments

  1. We encourage students to enrol for the term, in the same class or classes so you can get to know your teacher and your teacher can get to know you. This way you can learn and progress faster with consistent attendance. You can book in via Punchpass and pay for the term by credit card or internet banking, or cash when you come into the room. You’re also welcome to join mid-term, email us and arrange to pay the balance of term via internet banking or cash.
  2. Once you have enrolled, if you can’t make it to class please let your teacher know by texting  0433 999 017 or sending an email.
  3. You can do make-ups for classes that have been missed and you have contacted us about. Please do these make-ups before the end of term.
  4. Everyone progresses at their own pace. Beginner/General classes are a great place to start. In Level 2 students are expected to be starting their own practice and attending at least 2 classes.  A good way to prepare for Level 2 is to do intensives and retreats.
  5. Please don’t wear strong perfumes to class and also take care of your personal hygiene – everyone is breathing in deeply!
  6. Please re-enrol for the next term at the end of each term. This lets us know how many spaces we have for new students.

Payments

  1. If you are an existing student of the school and will be away for part of the term you can pay pro-rata for the part of the term you’ll be present. Please calculate this yourself and let me know.
  2. New students to the school can join at any time in the term and pay pro-rata for the remainder of the term.
