Iyengar Yoga for Beginners: an Introduction to the Classic Poses

The Beginners/General classes at our yoga school are thoughtfully designed as a supportive pathway for students venturing into the realm of Iyengar yoga. These sessions serve as a foundational guide, meticulously aiding individuals in acquainting themselves with the practice’s essence. Our structured approach systematically nurtures and enhances strength and flexibility. The curriculum commences at a manageable pace, gradually progressing as each participant’s capacity expands. These classes encompass both active and vital components, highlighting the comprehensive nature of Iyengar Yoga.

Contrary to popular misconceptions, one doesn’t need to possess contortionist abilities to participate. You don’t need to be able to twist like a pretzel to enjoy yoga and reap it’s many benefits! Men especially stand to benefit from yoga for what it can offer in terms of  back-care, strength and peace of mind. Classes are pitched to the capacity of the students – we want to help all bodies access the joy of yoga. Our focus is on the journey itself, and transformation often begins with as little as one weekly class. However, more noticeable progress can be observed with regular attendance, ideally twice weekly.

BKS Iyengar Yoga for Beginners Sequence

Our faculty comprises experienced teachers who boast extensive expertise in the art of Iyengar yoga. Each instructor has undergone stringent examinations, demonstrating proficiency within the Iyengar system. Classes are structured at various times throughout the week, ensuring accessibility to accommodate diverse schedules. Our term schedules are loosely aligned with school terms, guaranteeing ease of participation for a wider audience.

Our seasoned instructors meticulously guide and support students venturing into Iyengar yoga, systematically aiding in developing strength and flexibility. The classes are designed to begin at a pace that suits individual capacities, gradually advancing as practitioners progress. In addition to active sessions, our curriculum includes restorative yoga, creating a comprehensive and balanced practice. Understanding that one’s flexibility isn’t a prerequisite for yoga is essential. The focus lies in the progressive journey; while significant change can be experienced with one class per week, regular attendance of two sessions amplifies the pace of transformation.

The foundation of our beginner’s sequence rests upon the expertise and experience of our instructors. All our teachers have dedicated years to practising Iyengar yoga, having completed stringent examinations validating their teaching proficiency within the Iyengar system. We offer classes at diverse times during the week to accommodate varying schedules, aligning our term times loosely with school terms for increased accessibility.
